Introduced in the autumn of 1959, the Bentley S2 appeared externally unchanged from the S-Type predecessors, though the performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6,230cc aluminium-alloy V8 engine. Although wider and shorter than the ‘six’ it replaced, the new power unit fitted relatively easily within the engine bay, relocation of the steering box from inside to outside of the chassis frame being the most obvious alteration to the previous arrangements. Immensely successful both in the domestic and international markets, the Bentley S2 remained in production until the autumn of 1962.
Available in both Rolls-Royce and Bentley forms, H J Mulliner’s two-door drophead coupé (Design No. 7504) was by far the most popular of these exclusive soft-tops, a total of 107 being built on the Cloud II/S2 standard-wheelbase chassis. Widely regarded as the last of the true coachbuilt Bentleys, this example was built shortly after the merger of H.J Mulliner and Park Ward, to the design of Norwegian stylist Vilhelm Koren. Built on a standard Bentley S2 chassis, this car is just one of 18 S2 Continental Drophead Coupe Adaptations made.
In 2001 the S2 underwent modern upgrades from Bentley specialists English Automotive including a bespoke air conditioning system and electric windows installed to offer modern day luxury driving. A full respray was also undertaken by English Automotive who finished the car in Astral Blue. Recent works carried out by ourselves include a full engine and gear box rebuild, all engine bay compartments refurbished and a full engine bay detail. The radiator has been re-cored, both rear window regulators have been replaced and a hood service has also been undertaken. Additionally the vehicle has recently been serviced along with road testing.
