Classic Car Auctions’ 21 April sale proved a refreshing change from recent multi-million-pound events, with a number of classics selling for less than £5000, and plenty of bargains getting away for less than their pre-sale estimates.
A 1968 Jaguar 420G looked well bought at £3180. The car had been with the vendor for more than a decade and, with an MoT valid until 2016, it appeared to be ready to use. Buyers were no doubt buoyed by the news that it was driven more than 80 miles to the sale.
If you prefer your cars to be powered by a V8, you wouldn’t find one much cheaper than a 1996 Range Rover 4.0 SE, which sold for £1272. The automatic example was sold with partial service history and had covered a whisker under 80,000 miles. It had also been treated to new rear brake discs and pads, plus a fresh battery.
Also sporting a V8 – though a smaller 3.5-litre unit – was a 1970 Rover P5B Coupe, which was bought for £2332. Like the 420G, it was also driven 80 miles to the sale.
A 1972 Karmann Ghia fell short of its £7500 lower estimate to sell for £6413. It looked like good value, despite some remedial paintwork being required.
Also failing to hit its estimate was a 1994 Porsche 968 Sport – good news for the buyer, who bagged it for £8480.
A tempting Morris Oxford Police car that featured an uprated 1750cc engine block boasted an extensive history file, which covered its time in service with Mid-Wales Police. It fetched £1908.
