A 1960 Volkswagen Kombi Samba Bus has sold for $202,000 (£102,000) at Shannons' 23 February sale in Melbourne, in which 21 classics sold for a total of $1.35m (£682,000).

Also outperforming their pre-sale estimates were two EK Holdens from the WA Collection – a rare 1962 Utility that had spent a number of years in storage and a 1961 Special Sedan with just 10,000 miles on the clock.

The younger of the pair sold for $30,500 (£15,400), while the older sedan fetched $1500 more.

A 1955 Jaguar XK140 FHC with a number of modern upgrades, including power steering and air conditioning, made $84,000 (£42,450).

Falling slightly short of the Jaguar's sale price was a 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL. It had passed through the hands of just three previous owners and was sold with both hard- and soft-tops. It achieved $73,000 (£36,900).

An Australian-bodied '37 Pontiac Businessman's Coupe fetched $27,000 (£13,650), while a Bean 18/50 Tourer was a more unusual choice at $21,000 (£10,600).

Last of the highlights was a '76 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. The big Yank was offered with no reserve, and eventually sold for $29,500 (£14,900).
