For the past 12 weeks, the British public have been casting their votes to decide which supercar from each decade or era of motoring deserves to be represented in a massive display at this year’s Classic & Sports Car Show, which takes place from 28-30 October at London’s historic Alexandra Palace.
Following the submission of more than 17,000 votes, the 33 contenders – which included everything from Mercedes-Benz’ SSK through to Ferrari’s F40 – have now been whittled down to just 11 finalists – one from each era, beginning with pre-1914 pioneers and ending with the latest cutting-edge class of hybrid hypercars.
Successful finalists include the Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Blower, which wrestled 50 per cent of the vote from the Bugatti Type 43 and Mercedes-Benz SSK, and the McLaren F1, which proved a comfortable victor over the Jaguar XJ220 and Bugatti EB110, taking 80 per cent of the vote.
Each of the 11 finalists will feature as part of an incredible central display at the Classic & Sports Car Show, which will include some of the world’s most desirable and technologically significant vehicles. The second stage of the poll will result in one of these cars being crowned the ‘greatest supercar ever’, with the announcement to be made live at Alexandra Palace.
“More than 17,000 people voted for the cars in our shortlist, and it’s safe to say they did a good job – the 11 finalists are truly spectacular,” said James Elliott, Classic & Sports Car group editor. “Indeed, there’s a strong case for each and every one of them to take home the ‘Century of Supercars’ title, but there can only be one winner.
