FIAT 130 SALOON

4-door 5-seater saloon.

Fiat's 1970s attempt to produce a successful large car failed like all previous projects. Promising chassis and fine Lampredi-designed V6 engine (nor same as Dino, incidentally) hidden by uninspired square-rig shell. Redeemed, eventually, by giving birth to superb coupé (below). All-independent suspension (rear end adopted by 2.4-litre Dinos) and choice of automatic or ZF five-speed manual transmissions. Four wheel discs and optional power-steering did little to cheer up dowdy character. 3.2-litres from 1971, with 110mph top speed.
