VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT

2-door/3-door/4-door/5-door 5-seater saloon/hatchback/estate.

The first of the seventies VW 'transformation' models, reversing the Beetle dynasty. Based on the Audi 80, with Giugiaro re-styling, Passat had Audi front engine (water-cooled) and front-wheel drive, front discs, and many body derivatives. Hatchback options arrived here from 1975 (along with 1.6-litre engine), and the first diesels from 1979. Not nearly as rugged or unbreakable as Beetles, but much faster - 100mph from 1.5-1.6-litre cars. Replaced by re-styled Passat 2 in 1981.
