VOLKSWAGEN POLO

3-door 4-seater hatchback.

Third of VW's modern seventies generation of front-drive hatchbacks (Passat and Golf were the first two), complete with all-new small engine, simple but well laid-out accommodation and all-independent suspension. An absolutely archetypical Supermini, which sold strongly even though only one style was available. Short-lived Audi 50 was its identical sister car. In the UK, 1.1-litre version available for 1977 but 1.3-litre never sold here. 80mph with 40-plus mpg for 895cc car was very creditable. Replaced by re-styled Polo 2 for 1982.
