MG J1 MIDGET

Salonette, open 4-seater.

An amalgam of C- and D-type parts, the J1 was the four seat version of the immortal J2 two-seater sports car. It had a D-type chassis frame with an 86ins wheelbase, and used a productionised C-type engine (again with 83mm stroke to give 847cc), there was a cross-flow head with twin SU carbs and a new lightweight four-speed gearbox with near central remote control. But some owners experienced trouble with oil permeating into the windings of the still vertically mounted dynamo. The car sold for £220 in open form or £255 in Salonette guise. Lacks the elegance of the J2.
