Goodwood Festival of Speed uncovered

| 30 Jun 2011

Take a look at what's in store at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The three-day celebration of motorsport kicks off tomorrow but C&SC is on site at the Festival's Moving Motor Show precursor event to give you a taste of what's in store for the 150,000+ fans set to walk through the gates from 1 - 3 July.

Star attraction is this amazing Jaguar-inspired sculpture outside Lord March's home.

Designed by Gerry Judah, it pays homage to the Jaguar E-type's 50th anniversary and looks to be one of Judah's most spectacular ever in his 12 years of wowing crowds arriving on the lawns.

You'll see loads more on the marque throughout the weekend, especially over at the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d'Élégance which is celebrating the E-type's golden anniversary with a class dedicated to famous examples, including this former C&SC feature Lightweight racer: the car Roy Salvadori took to third place in the 1963 Goodwood TT.

The Style et Luxe also stars this unique, William Towns take on a Series III E-type (below).

While the Streamliners class is set to impress, particularly with Sir Norman Foster's incredible 1934 Dymaxion re-creation:

The concours is also hosting this amazing 1934 Crossley-Burney (below) - the rear-engined streamliner on loan from the National Motor Museum.

The paddocks are packed with some awesome kit, particularly Gasoline Alley which is home to the 40+ Indy 500 racers that will take to the hill over the weekend.

This 1957 Kurtis Kraft-Offenhauser (below) is just one of them.

And so is this carbon/kevlar-bodied 1986 Lotus Cosworth 96T (below).

The Cathedral paddock's packing plenty of thrills too, including a line-up of famous competition Alfa Romeos.

Along with a line-up of competition Jaguars.

Lookout for C&SC's Magazine Editor on the hill in this Group 44 E-type (below) on Sunday.

There's plenty to wow on the static front too, including Mercedes Benz' heritage display (below)

And the famous Lohner Porsche (below).

Goodwood also has plenty of new fare such as Lotus' latest Esprit (below) on offer.
