Rally stars to reunite at Eifel Rallye Festival

| 21 May 2014

A galaxy of motor sport stars are set to shine at the Eifel Rallye Festival, taking place in Daun, Germany on 25-26 July.

Former rally aces Stig Blomqvist, Harald Demuth and Bjorn Waldegard will join their modern counterparts Václav Pech Mladší and Matthias Kahle on tarmac and gravel stages throughout the three-day event, with demonstrations taking place both at day and night. While not being a fully fledged rally stage, the all-gravel Daun site does boast a water splash and jump, ensuring there will be plenty to keep visitors entertained.

Blomqvist will be reunited with the Audi quattro A2 in which he came second overall during the 1984 Monte-Carlo Rally, and is slated to take to the stage to test his skills. Audi will also be taking a second quattro, which is to be driven by two-time Germany Rally Champion Harald Demuth.

Bjorn Waldegard, who claimed the World Rally Championship in 1979, will also be making an appearance. It is thought that his car will be provided by Mercedes, though organisers have yet to confirm what he will be driving. The Swede recently turned 70 years old, but still enjoys historic motor sport events.

“I think it is a little bit the same as being a good drummer, or a good man on a bicycle, except that cars are my sport. The feeling that you can control the car in high speed on different and difficult roads – that is what gives you the kick. And you see that I must like it because I am 70 years old now and I am still doing it!”

Six-time Czech Rally Champion Vaclav Pech Junior will be attending the event for the first time. He'll be swapping his modern MINI Cooper S2000 1.6T for a more exciting set of wheels: a Ford RS200 from the 1986 World Rally Championship season. In period, the car boasted more than 420bhp.

Homegrown talent will also play an important role at the event, in the form of seven-time Germany Rally Champion Matthias Kahle. Kahle will be supported by Skoda Germany, which has provided him the use of a 130RS.

As well as the racing, visitors will be treated to an open air cinema on the first evening, which will be showing highlights from 'Power to the Beetle', a film from German filmmaker Helmut Diemel. The Autostadt museum has thrown its weight behind the screening by promising to take two Porsche Salzburg Beetles to the event.

For the first time in the history of the festival, visitors from outside Germany will be able to order tickets and programmes in advance.
