A special dinner has been announced to celebrate the achievements of the only man to win World Championships on both two and four wheels, John Surtees.
The BRDC Silverstone Classic Dinner, which was first launched at last year's event, is due to take place on the 25 July, the first day of the Silverstone Classic. The meal marks 50 years since Surtees achieved his record-setting feat, which has yet to be matched.
The evening is set to be compered by veteran disc jockey Johnnie Walker. Walker has been a life-long car enthusiast: his first job after leaving school was in the motor trade, and he went on to study motor mechanics.
Derek Warwick, president of the British Racing Driver's Club, said: "It promises to be a very special evening. We are incredibly proud and privileged to be honouring John – a true racing legend whose remarkable accomplishments may never be equalled.
"The BRDC is delighted to be paying its own tribute to one of its most outstanding members."
Surtees has a special affinity with the Northamptonshire circuit: “Formula One started for me at Silverstone, when Colin Chapman – after I had tested his Lotus 18 there – said: ‘John, drive for me when you are not racing your bikes’.”
“It was then rather satisfying to get second place in the British Grand Prix with Colin in that first year of switching between two and four wheels in 1960."
