Silverstone Classic's latest auction surpassed expectations when £5m-worth of vehicles were purchased from 25-27 July, with the firm also recording two world records.
The first top price was achieved for a 1979 Ferrari 308GTS, which fetched a healthy £82,225 – some £50,000 more than its pre-sale lower estimate. Silverstone Auctions claims that it is a new best for the model.
Fittingly, it was another Modena export that claimed the second record of the day – a 1989 Ferrari 328GTS. It sold for £77,050. A 1996 Ferrari 456GT doubled its lower estimate, with the hammer falling at £49,450.
Though the records remained the preserve of Ferrari, the highest price achieved in the sale was for a 1950 Healey Silverstone, which changed hands for £212,750. A 1996 Jaguar XJ220 – fittingly finished in Silverstone Green – sold for more than £17,000 above its upper estimate at £187,450. An attractive Bristol 403 saloon also beat its pre-sale upper estimate, reaching £62,100.
Managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, said: "It's been a fantastic weekend at the Silverstone Classic and I'm delighted that we have achieved our highest ever sales value."
Sir Jackie Stewart's first competition car was also in the sale, a 1962 Marcos GT Xylon that sold for £41,975.
Meanwhile, a 1976 Harrier Jump Jet and a 1988 Panavia Tornado sold for £105,800 and £36,800 respectively, though neither was airworthy.
