A rare Ferrari is set to shine at Bonhams' Quail Lodge sale on 14 August. The 250 Mille Miglia boasts a rich racing history, which began in California in 1953 with American racer Bill Devin.
The car made its racing debut at the San Francisco Region SCCA's third Annual Members' Madera race meeting in September, where Devin finished third in the novice event before handing the reins to Phil Hill, who won the day's main event.
The Ferrari's next outing, again with Devin at the wheel, was at Stead Air Force Base in October the same year, followed by another meeting in November, this time with Devin's brother Gene at the controls.
The 250MM changed hands several times after Devin's ownership, before eventually making its way back to its native Italy in 1986, when it was purchased by Count Vittorio Zanon de Valgiurata. He drove the car in that year's Mille Miglia Storica, and tackled the 1000-mile event again in 1988.
Shortly thereafter the car was acquired for the Maranello Rosso Collection.
It is set to star alongside another Ferrari from the same collection – a 1962 250GTO Berlinetta, which is expected to set a new world record at the same sale.
