A host of muscle cars took top money at Mecum's $15m Chicago auction, which took place from 9-11 October. The three top spots in the sales charts were filled by Ford GTs, with classics playing a rare second fiddle.
The highest price – $475,000 – was paid for a 2006 Heritage Edition GT with 182 miles on the clock, closely followed by $335,000 for another GT from the same year and $35,000 less for a 2005 model.
A 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback performed best out of the classic lots, selling for $200,000. The Black Jade Pony car had covered just 35,162 miles and spent an extended period in the ownership of baseball star John Smiley.
Just $15,000 less was enough to take home a stunning 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda finished in a rare shade – Rallye Red. Only two cars were completed to the same specification, which included white interior, chrome mirrors and side stripes. The matching numbers example had covered a handful more miles than the Boss Fastback.
Almost as rare, and a bargain by comparison, was a 1969 Dodge Hemi Super Bee that fetched $127,500. Only 38 four-speed Hemi Super Bees were built in '69.
A 1967 Chevrolet Corvette completed the pick of the classic lots. The Elkhart Blue car had covered just 511 miles since a complete restoration and looked as if it was worth every cent of the $110,000 final price.
