An incredible Le Mans-winning Ferrari 275GTB Competizione is set to cross the block at Bonhams' Scottsdale auction on 15 January 2015.
The 1966 Ferrari boasts a staggering list of wins including the 1969 Spa-Francorchamps 1000km and Imola 500km, as well as a class win at Le Mans in 1967.
The car was raced consecutively at La Sarthe for three years, winning the GT class at the hands of Fillipinetti team drivers Rico Steinmann and Dieter Spörry.
Chassis 09079 was delivered new to race equip owner Georges Fillipinetti of Geneva, Switzerland, and was the penultimate example of its type – just 12 were built in total. It was in Fillipinetti's stewardship that the car had its greatest successes.
Following its exciting early history, the car was sold to a series of American collectors. Its body was damaged by fire in 1985, which led to a full restoration in the workshops of marque specialist Brandoli after which it received Ferrari Classiche certification.
Since then the car has taken honours at some of the world's most prestigious concours, including Pebble Beach. Most recently, it was among 60 Ferraris selected to celebrate the firm's 60th anniversary in Beverly Hills.
Despite sharing similarities with the standard 275, the Competizione was built around an entirely new chassis, which was lighter and stronger. It also benefited from reinforced hubs, wider wheels and twin saddle-mounted alloy fuel tanks with quick-access filler caps. Weight was further reduced by its all-aluminium coachwork.
