Hong Kong overrun by classics

| 21 Nov 2014

More than 100 classics cars packed Hong Kong's harbour front for the inaugural Classic Car and Vintage Festival, which took place on 15-16 November.

The cream of the crop was a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray that scooped the top award – and a Frederique Constant watch – for owner Eryck Su. In addition to the Best of Show award, Su's Corvette also won the Best Coupe gong.

The Best Saloon was judged to be Joseph Bosarge's 1963 Volkswagen 1500 Type 3 Wagon, while Kevin Yeung's 1993 Porsche 964 Speedster fought off stiff competition to emerge victorious in the Best Roadster category.

The People's Choice prize was awarded to Neil McCann's 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary edition.

For many, however, the Edsbrat Formula Junior racing car proved the highlight of the show. The racer was built in Hong Kong in the early 1960s by Eddie Carvalho –winner of the first Macau Grand Prix in 1954 – and was campaigned with great success throughout the decade. Carvalho's daughter, Nana, put in an appearance to see the car take pride of place at the show.

Away from the competition, a party atmosphere prevailed, with free hair, make-up and wet-shave services being offered throughout the weekend. A raft of vintage-inspired bands kept the mood upbeat, while a 'silent' cinema showed classic hits such as The Italian Job.

Organisers have confirmed that, following the success of the inaugural event, plans are afoot to make the show even bigger for 2015.
