The Mormon Meteor speed-record car has been awarded Best of Show at the Arizona Concours d’Elegance, which took place at the historic Biltmore Resort on 24 January. The 1935 Duesenberg SJ Special shattered the peace with a roar from its supercharged straight-eight as it was driven onto the red carpet by owner Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Built in 1935, the Meteor was the creation of speed-racing pioneer Ab Jenkins and chalked up a number of record runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats, including a 24-hour average speed of 154mph and 48-hour average speed of 148mph. Jenkins then modified the car for use on public roads.
The Meteor came out on top against stiff competition, with the field of 99 classics whittled down to four class winners which, in in addition to the speed car, included a 1956 Ferrari 250GT Zagato, a 1931 Chrysler Imperial CG LeBaron dual-cowl phaeton and a 1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Pillarless Berline with Figoni et Falaschi coachwork.
