A 1980 MGB GT in completely original and unrestored timewarp condition is set to cross the block at Classic Car Auctions’ 1-2 April sale. It is estimated to sell for £12,000-15,000.
Incredibly, the car has covered just 1500 miles since rolling off a British Leyland forecourt in September 1980 thanks to its first owner, who attempted to preserve the car in perfect condition. The MG spent more than 30 years in dry storage during which time it was hardly touched, save for a service and the application of rustproofing in 1982. The car was eventually made ready for the road in December 2014 and has been driven less than 200 miles since.
“This is a genuine, preserved, unrestored example of a much-loved and enjoyable, classic British sports car,” said Nigel Gough, classic car specialist at CCA. “Rarely do we see a car of this age with such low mileage, and the owner has clearly kept the car this way intentionally to create what we call a timewarp example of the model, which is highly collectable.”
The right-hand-drive example is finished in Brooklands Green and retains its original orange and brown ‘deckchair’ seats, which have become a rare sight due to changing tastes. The chrome, glass, headlining, dashboard and carpets are all described as being in very good condition.
