Lamborghinis lead Coys’ Monaco sale

A quartet of stunning Lamborghinis including a one-off glass-roofed Espada are among the highlights of Coys' forthcoming Monaco sale.

The Lamborghinis – three of which are from the private collection of Fabio Lamborghini, the nephew of the marque's founder Ferruccio – will be joined at the 11 May auction by a host of other highly desirable motors; in total, 106 vehicles worth more than £20million will be up for grabs.

Other stand-outs include a pair of racing Lolas, a Group 5 BMW, a Porsche 959 and a couple of Ferrari 308s – one owned by former F1 driver Michele Alboreto, the other by tennis superstar Björn Borg.

The glass-roofed Lamborghini Espada is a true one-of-a-kind car: custom-built for its first owner, Franklin S Davis of Massachusetts, USA with a large Plexiglass panel on its roof and a 15-coat metallic-flake paint job. Almost as interestingly, it made its public debut at the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix – driven around the track prior to the start of the race by Prince Rainier III, with Princess Grace and his son Albert II alongside him.

Admittedly, it looks a little on the pricey side at €550,000 to €750,000 (£482-657k) but if you can't quite stretch to that, there is a 'standard' Espada also on sale, and for a mere €250,000 to €280,000 (£220-245k).

Other Lambo supercars heading to auction with Coys include a 1967 Miura P 400 – a Bertone dream in orange with an €800,000 (£700,000) price tag – and a 1972 Jarama S1.

“It’s the second time this year that we have been able to put together an auction of this magnitude,” said Coys’ Chris Routledge.

“In the current market buyers are looking for quality and cars that will maintain and increase their value. So finding cars of the right quality and with interesting provenance is extremely important.”

The auction takes place at Espace Fontvieille in Monaco on 11 May and you can view a full lot list here.
