He's known as a passionate musician and enthusiastic broadcaster, but it seems Jools Holland has excellent taste in cars, too.

At Bonhams' Aston Martin sale, held at Englefield House near Reading, Berkshire, last weekend, the hammer fell on this 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Mk1 Volante, which was sold by Holland seven years ago, at £494,300.

It was one of the more notable lots at this single-marque auction on 2 June that hit £4,474,499 in total; you can view a gallery of our 10 favourites from the sale here.

This car left the factory in a different colour, and with a different engine and gearbox

That final price, including premiums, was only a sliver under its pre-sale estimate of £500,000-£600,000 and recognises chassis number 3659/R's status as one of just 140 DB6 Mk1 Volantes.

Speaking previously of his time as this Aston's custodian, Holland said: "A few years ago I bought an Aston Martin convertible: a DB6 Volante.

"And I remembered that when I was a boy, and we lived in a tiny house in Greenwich without a bathroom or any heating, my dad, who's dead now, bought me a toy model of the same car. And I realised that's why I'd picked that car." This is surely a tale familiar to many classic car enthusiasts.

"So I decided to drive my car back to my old neighbourhood. It was a dark, misty autumn evening and I parked outside my old house. There was no one around. I suddenly imagined my front door opening and my younger self coming down the path and me opening the car door and saying: 'Hey, it's me! Jump in!'"

Ready for cross-country touring, whatever the weather

This example is fitted with an earlier DB5 engine (number 400/2116) and is finished in metallic green with a black leather interior.

It was completed on 26 October 1967 and supplied by H R Owen (Bradway Autos) a few weeks later on 17 November.

When it rolled off the production line it had an automatic gearbox, power steering, chrome wheels and a limited-slip diff, and it wore the numberplate 'OYV 162F' during its early years in London. At this time it was also Autumn Gold.

It was during Holland's ownership that the original automatic transmission was changed for a manual. It was also repainted in Deep Purple, it is understood.

The DB6's last owner before the sale, who bought it from Holland with the registration 'RNB 5', invested in a bodywork restoration carried out by LT Classics of London, and in April 2017 it had further extensive work by Aston Martin specialist RS Williams, to the tune of £33,533.
