Classic & Sports Car – Star-studded cast confirmed for Revival touring car celebration

Jason Plato and Gabriele Tarquini are among the stand-out names on a star-studded list of touring car heroes who will race at the Goodwood Revival next month.

The pair are among six British Touring Car Champions who will head to the Sussex circuit on 7-9 September, in the 60th anniversary year for the UK’s premier national race series.

Plato, who has won a record 96 BTCC races, will compete in the RAC TT Celebration, sharing a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with long-time Revival partner, Craig Davies.

Ex-Formula 1 racer Tarquini, who is best known in the UK for winning the BTCC in 1994 in a factory Alfa Romeo 155, will line up in the St Mary’s Trophy for 1960s saloons. The Italian is still a force in international touring car racing and is currently leading the FIA World Touring Car Cup in a Hyundai i30 N TCR – at the ripe age of 56.

Revival returnee Andrew Jordan has been confirmed for this year's touring car extravaganza

Goodwood claims its line-up of tin-top stars share more than 500 professional wins across touring car series all round the world. But it is familiar names from both the past and present BTCC that dominate the roster.

Current BTCC champion Ash Sutton will be among those making his Revival debut, in a Ford-Lotus Cortina in the St Mary’s Trophy. He will face 2013 champion and Goodwood regular Andrew Jordan, who will race the Jordan Racing Team Cortina of Take That singer Howard Donald.

Three-time champion Matt Neal will be in action beside 1980s BTCC regular Nick Whale in the latter’s Studebaker Lark Daytona. Neal’s former Team Dynamics team-mate and fellow triple champion Gordon Shedden will also be present, for his return to British motorsport for the first time since moving to the world touring car series (WTCR) with Audi for 2018.

The usual mix of popular heroes from the past will return, many of whom boast a range of tin-top success. They include Jackie Oliver, who took four wins in his Ford Mustang in 1966 and ’67; motorcyclist Stuart Graham, who scored 19 tin-top wins following his switch to car racing; 1973 Silverstone TT winner Derek Bell; and Steve Soper, widely considered as one of the greatest touring car racers in history, despite never clinching a BTCC crown.

Goodwood regular Rob Huff, who races a VW Golf in WTCR, will also return, as will former SEAT BTCC race winner Darren Turner and three-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx.

A further dash of European touring car talent will be added by ex-Audi hero Emanuele Pirro and long-time BMW star Jörg Müller.

The Revival will also mark the BTCC’s 60th anniversary with a special race. The Jack Sears Memorial Trophy will run for the first time, featuring a grid of cars similar to those that contested the series' opening season, including the Austin A105 in which inaugural champion Sears raced to victory in 1958.
