Action at the 2018 Goodwood Revival wasn’t just limited to the track – with over 300 items crossing the block at Bonhams’ auction.

And commanding £1,359,000, this 1964 Shelby Cobra 289CI Competition Roadster was the sale’s priciest lot.

Chassis number CSX 2430 is one of only 32 factory-built competition Cobras and was campaigned extensively in period, first by ‘Gentleman’ Tom Payne.

More recently, it’s been restored by marque authority Bill Murray, at which point it was also prepared for historic racing with items including a five-point safety harness fitted – these modern additions have since been removed, but its lucky next owner will get them as part of this sale.

Ex-Brundle racer and Keith Richards’ Dino were sold at the Goodwood Revival

Another stunning racer also hit impressive heights, this ex-TWR JaguarSport XJR-11 Group C Sports Prototype, driven in period by Martin Brundle, Alain Ferté and Jan Lammers, selling for £1,191,000.

It’s the last and most successful XJR-11 chassis, ready to race following a recent restoration and resplendent in its iconic Silk Cut livery.

But it wasn’t just racers in this sale, and the top roadgoing car was a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster.

A matching-numbers vehicle that was delivered new to the USA and is still in its original Silver Grey metallic colour, it was sold with a Mercedes-Benz Classic Expert Assessment for £754,200.

Another silver classic, Rolling Stone Keith Richards’ 1972 Dino 246GT, was one of the auction’s notable lots.

It’s thought that its odometer’s 30,000 miles are genuine and this low-mile slice of rock-star memorabilia went for £442,750.

Fetching a bit more was this 1960 Aston Martin DB4 built to GT specification, which has done 38 miles since that work was completed.

As a DB4GT recreation, it achieved £563,500 – by no means cheap, but a lot more affordable than an original!

Elsewhere, a 1924 Bugatti Type 30 two-seat racer sold for £540,500, the fabulous 1956 Fiat-Bartoletti Tipo 642 racing-car transporter achieved £402,500, a lovely looking 1937 Jaguar SS100 3½-litre Roadster sold for £631,000 and a 1968-’69-type Ford P68 ‘F3L’ Group 6 endurance-racing coupé went to a new owner for £511,750.
