If you’re heading to this Saturday’s Autumn Classic at Castle Combe, you’re in for a treat.

This Porsche 917K is going to be on show as part of the event’s tribute to Le Mans icons, which includes a Ford GT40 celebration, 50 years after Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi took one to victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

But, not to be outdone, this Gulf-liveried Stuttgart star has also enjoyed its fair share of racing success.

In 1970, this 917K starred on screen and on track, coming home fourth at the Sebring 12 Hours with Rodriguez and Leo Kinnunen, and competing at Le Mans.

But that’s not all – art mimicked reality, as it also appeared in the Steve McQueen film Le Mans the same year.

Sadly, its silver screen action left the Porsche with accident damage, so number 013 returned to its maker to be brought back to best. At this point its chassis number was changed to 034, so it’s since been known as 013/034.

Its competitive comeback in 1971 saw Rodriguez paired with Jackie Oliver, bringing victories at the Daytona 24 Hours and Monza 1000km.

And there was more success for the 917K, this time with Oliver and Richard Attwood, who took two more first-place finishes, before Derek Bell and Gijs van Lennep won the Paris 1000km and came second in Barcelona.

Two years later, current custodian Mark Finburgh took ownership.

“We’re enormously thrilled to have Mr Finburgh’s very special car along for the Autumn Classic this year,” said Tom Davis, Castle Combe’s Head of Marketing.

“Although it will only be present in a static manner, it still promises to make many car enthusiasts’ days as they finally get to meet one of their heroes in the flesh.”

The Porsche 917K and Ford GT40 displays are just some of the many non-competitive attractions at Saturday’s event, which also include the ‘Classic Paddock’ plus club displays.

And there’s lots to enjoy on track, too, with seven races:

  • Formula Vintage – VSCC Pre-War Sports Cars
  • Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club Norman Dewis Trophy for Pre 66 Jaguars
  • Phil Broster Memorial Race for Healeys
  • FJHRA/HSCC Historic Formula Junior
  • Historic Intermarque race by FISCAR
  • GT and Sports Car Cup
  • The Autumn Classic Challenge – CCRC Historic Touring Car Race

The day kicks off with qualifying, before track demos, with racing due to start at 1255.

You can get tickets on the gate (adults £25, seniors £20, accompanied children aged 16 and under go free). Click here for full details.
