There's an all-new race for next year’s Goodwood Members' Meeting on 6-7 April, and it’ll see pre-1930 vintage racers going wheel-to-wheel.
The John Duff Trophy is named after one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’ and the first Canadian to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours – he’s also the only Canadian, so far, to take overall victory at La Sarthe.
That win was, of course, in a Bentley, and came in 1924 alongside factory test driver Frank Clement, finishing 10 minutes clear of their nearest rivals.
His racing debut was at Brooklands in 1920 and he’d go on to hold more than 50 endurance and speed world records – he’s famous for driving a 3 Litre Bentley for two successive days at Brooklands, averaging close to 90mph, to secure the Double 12 record.
When the John Duff Trophy makes its debut at next spring’s meeting, it will honour the man responsible for bringing Bentley to Le Mans with a selection of ’20s Bentleys, plus hot competition from Mercedes-Benz, Bugatti and Alfa Romeo.
It’s the first new race for the 77th Members’ Meeting and the second to be confirmed, after the SF Edge Trophy's return was announced last month.
