Classic & Sports Car – Why this Peugeot 309 is the low-mile classic you didn't know you needed

Eye-catching classics don’t have to be supercars and unique creations. Take this 1991 Peugeot 309 GTi, for example.

This much-loved five-door has travelled just 131 miles from new. That’s it. And now it could be yours when it comes to auction next month.

A hot practical hatchback might not necessarily be the most obvious candidate to take on low-mile status, so what’s this car's history?

This red 309 GTi, chassis number VF33AD6B210281718, was bought new in 1991 from Charters of Aldershot.

Its owner spent a lot of time working abroad and had a second car, meaning his brand-new Peugeot was barely driven.

It was, however, well cared for, which bodes well for its next owner, and its garage-bound existence means that it’s apparently as good as new.

It’s described as being in ‘showroom condition’, with a couple of ‘small and insignificant’ marks on the body, and an interior and engine bay that are ‘amazing’.

Just look at it – with its bright, gleaming paintwork and fade-free black bumpers, it takes you right back to the early ’90s.

Might it even be the best-preserved Peugeot 309 GTi in the UK? Well, possibly. According to How Many Left?, in 2018 just 59 were licensed in the UK, a further 286 SORN. And of those, few will be in as-new, sub-150-mile condition.

Your chance to claim this French family-friendly classic for your own is on 26 February in Barons’ Classic Winter Warmer auction at Sandown Park Race Course, where it has an £8-11,000 guide price.

It will be interesting to see what it sells for. And will its new owner drive or garage it?
