Classic & Sports Car – 10 Bentleys head to Heveningham for centenary celebration

Breathtaking Bentleys will be out in force at events this summer in the marque’s centennial year – and the 10 bound for Suffolk’s Heveningham Concours will make a very impressive line-up.

The oldest will be a 1921 3 Litre TT, pictured above.

Chassis number 22 is a former Brooklands racer that was restored in the ’60s by Cyril Wadsworth, making use of as many original items from WO Bentley team cars as possible, including the A-Type gearbox from WO Bentley’s car that came home fourth in 1922’s Isle of Man Tourist Trophy.

This will be joined by a 1924 3 Litre Speed Model once owned by Jeremy Nicholls, Head Master at Stowe School near Silverstone, a 1928 6½-Litre Saloon with Gurney Nutting coachwork that’s been with its present keeper for the last 53 years, and one of 50 production ‘Blower’ Bentleys.

Two cars once owned by racer Forrest Lycett will also make an appearance. The 1931 Bentley 8 Litre Corsica Roadster is still trimmed in Lycett’s personal colours of black with claret wings and upholstery, and was driven by him when he set Class B international records at Brooklands just before the outbreak of war.

The other is a 1930 Bentley 4½ Litre Corsica Open Sports Coupé, a purpose-built racing/sports car, a bespoke work for Lycett by LC ‘Mac’ McKenzie.

A ’26 3 litre Saloon, and two 1930 models with Vanden Plas bodies will also feature: a Speed Six and a 4½ Litre Sports Tourer. Bringing things rather more up to date will be a 2006 Bentley Continental GT Zagato.

“In its centenary year, to have not one but two cars owned by Forrest Lycett, gentleman racing driver, renowned Bentley aficionado and one of the founders of the Bentley Drivers Club, is hopefully fitting,” said Max Hunt, chair of judges. “We look forward to welcoming these and other very special Bentleys.”

Heveningham Concours comes to the Grade I-listed Heveningham Hall in Suffolk on 22-23 June.
