Ferraris and Porsches lead no-reserve auction collection

Classic & Sports Car – This Ferrari 330GTC is for sale with no reserve – and it’s not alone

It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to Monterey Car Week, but with all the glitz and glamour that brings, potential bargains can be in short supply.

But peek in Bonhams’ catalogue for its Quail Lodge Auction in California on 15-16 August and you’ll see a number of rather desirable Ferraris and Porsche for sale, all with no reserve.

They’re all part of the Ted Gildred Collection: a 13-strong group of mostly European classics previously owned by a former US ambassador and businessman who passed away earlier this year.

And among them is this beauty, a 1966 Ferrari 330GTC.

The 126th example made, the 330GTC left the factory just before Christmas 1966, wearing coachwork by Pininfarina and a striking blue Azzurro finish, and with a 3967cc V12 beneath its bonnet.

Although originally sold in Switzerland, it was exported to the US in the early ’70s and passed through several owners over the next 40 years.

During that time it received two restorations – the first in the mid-’90s and another the following decade – and gained its current red finish. A well known example, it appeared at the first annual Cavallino Classic event in Palm Beach, Florida in 1992 and at the prestigious Greenwich Concours d’Elegance in 2013 before eventually joining Gildred’s fleet.

The 330GTC is one of three Ferraris in the Gildred collection, which also features another Italian classic in the form of a race-ready 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider.

But it seems Gildred had even more of a thing for German metal, with seven Porsches also offered for sale – and again, they’re all available with no reserve.

One of them is this 1956 Porsche 356A 1500 Carrera GS Coupé with coachwork by Reutter.

This Silver Metallic car departed Porsche’s factory on 5 April 1956 and has since spent much of its life in collections, firstly that of Rene Mauries.

While with Gildred it’s been carefully looked after and maintained, and although that’s not the original 1498cc flat-four engine, it is a correct type 547/1 Carrera GS unit.

A more modern Stuttgart machine in the collection is this fabulously restored example of the legendary 1973 RS 2.7.

This Porsche 911 was one of the last Carrera RS 2.7s produced, built to the Touring code 472 specifications and looking much like it does today.

After a few years it moved from Germany to the UK and subsequent sales saw it also spend time in Japan and the US. It entered Gildred’s collection in 2005 and has since been enjoyed on a number of classic car rallies.
