The marque that made Britain’s mark in Grand Prix racing, Vanwall, will live again with the announcement of six continuation cars from specialist Hall & Hall.

At Aintree in 1957, Stirling Moss took over the Vanwall of ill teammate Tony Brooks to score the first World Championship Grand Prix victory for a British driver in a British car, and did so at the British Grand Prix. The following year, Tony Vandervell’s team ruled the world as the six wins shared by Moss and ‘The racing dentist’ secured the inaugural Constructors’ title exactly 62 years ago today – and it is this specification that the £1.65m continuation cars recreate.

Based in Bourne, Lincolnshire, with former BRM staff among its payroll, Hall & Hall is no stranger to such work, having built a recreation Vanwall VW7 for the Donington Collection and listing the team’s transporter among its stock.

Clockwise from top left: thousands of hours will be spent on making these new cars faithful to the originals; view of Moss, Brooks and Lewis-Evans; meticulous recreation of the 2.5-litre engine

Within the deep, long nose will be a 2.5-litre engine built using the original blueprints, shrouded in a handbuilt body. Five of the six will be sold, the sixth being used by what will be the Vanwall Historic Racing Team.

“The Vanwall name is too important to consign to history,” Vanwall Group MD Iain Sanderson said. “The Vanwall story is untold to many, but it is a great British tale of innovation and achievement and shows what happens when the right team come together and push themselves fearlessly to reach a clearly defined goal.

“On this anniversary, we think the time is right to celebrate this great British story of success. Faithfully recreating the iconic 1958 championship winning car with six 100% accurate and authentic continuation cars is a fitting tribute to their historic success. The DNA that made those cars so successful also serves as an inspiring foundation for the future of the Vanwall marque, which I look forward to sharing in due course.”

The Vanwall will retail for £1.65m, excluding VAT

Andrew Garner, chairman of Vanwall Group, said: “I can still remember watching the Vanwalls at Aintree in ’57 when I was a boy and had the pleasure of sitting in one at Goodwood. I drove at all the major circuits in a Cooper T51 for many wonderful years but the Vanwall is the car I coveted.”

Former Historic Grand Prix Cars Association chairman Garner added that the Vanwalls will be fully race eligible. “In the right hands [they] will be unbeatable, repeating Tony Vandervell’s mission to beat the red cars!”
