A 385-mile, unregistered Jaguar XJ220 set a new model auction record on Saturday (18 September), when the hammer fell at £460,000 during Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale.

The record was previously held by a 1998 example that sold for £414,000, again with Bonhams, but this time at its Goodwood Festival of Speed auction on 5 July 2019.

However, it wasn’t the event’s top lot. That honour fell to another Jaguar, Valentine Lindsay’s 1956/1980s D-type, which achieved £799,000.

This 1993 supercar, with fewer than 400 miles on its odometer, is finished in Monza Red, with a Sand-coloured interior, and left to meet its first owner on 16 August of that year.

That owner was Woo Yung Tae, who bought it through his company Primrose International, and the car was delivered to Germany.

There it joined a collection of cars in a dehumidified storage facility, and the service book shows a single service by a German Jaguar dealer on 13 June 1994, after it had done 388km (241 miles).

Its second custodian acquired it in October 2015, at which point it became part of another collection but, as before, it was well cared for.

Indeed, in late 2019, the specialists at Don Law Racing completed an engine-out service, during which the unit itself was rebuilt, all of which came to more than £35,000.

In total, Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale made £10,991,071, 165 lots selling and 61 failing to find new homes.
