This summer’s Concours of Elegance, which returns for its 10th-anniversary edition to Hampton Court Palace on 2-4 September, will pay tribute to motoring’s female pioneers with the all-new Levitt Concours.
Its name honours Dorothy Levitt, the UK’s first female racing driver, who was also a keen motoring enthusiast and a pilot.
She began her competitive career at the 1903 Southport Speed Trials where she took her 12hp Gladiator to class victory, and also became the holder of the world’s first water speed record as well as the women’s world land speed record.
In addition to her achievements behind the wheel, Levitt, who died a century ago in 1922, age just 40, shared her experiences and through her writing encouraged other women to take up motoring.
A group of 30 classic cars, all owned by women, will enjoy a one-day tour from The Odney Club in Berkshire to Hampton Court Palace, where they’ll be displayed on Saturday 3 September.
