Allemano, Frua and Zagato created Berlinetta bodies for the Maserati A6G/54, a 160bhp straight-six-powered sports car closely related to the marque’s competition machines.

Zagato styled and built 20 cars between 1954 and 1957, including this example, chassis 2155, which features some unique details.

It was delivered to its first owner, Luigi Fornasari, just days before the 1956 Mille Miglia.

Sporting unpainted, bare-aluminium bodywork, the car set off from the start line in Brescia but crashed in Ravenna. Fornasari was unhurt, but his Maserati was badly damaged.

This Maserati A6G/54 then went back to Zagato for repairs.

While it was at the Italian coachbuilder’s workshop, it was painted silver metallic and fitted with a reworked radiator opening, plus new headlamps.

The updated alloy trim, which includes a metal strip that runs down the side of the car, is unique to this example.

Chassis 2155 changed hands a few times following its rebuild, but it continued to compete in races and hillclimbs throughout the 1950s.

In 2000, this Maserati A6G/54 Zagato was restored to its original specification, after a previous owner had it repainted red and fitted with covered headlights.

It’s sure to get lots of attention at Hampton Court Palace, where it will compete for the Best in Show award at Concours of Elegance from 30 August-1 September 2024.
