In the custom hot rod world, no idea is too radical, and limitations are just a figure of the imagination when you carefully plan out and assemble the perfect team. Leonard Lopez, founder and owner of Dominator and recipient of the Grand National Roadster Show Builder of the Year Award, has cemented a reputation as being one of the top designers and builders in the custom and hot rod realm. Dominator’s creations have consistently established themselves as national show winners and national publications. More than just stunning pieces of automotive art, every Dominator build delivers heart-pounding horsepower and impeccable handling.
Mickey Galloway, Tommy Enea, and Leonard Lopez came together with the entire staff at Dominator to create this stunning street legal 1934 Chevrolet Custom Roadster that is every bit as exhilarating to drive as it appears. Using the body of a 1934 Chevrolet to start, the trio went to work by completely transforming its appearance. The new altered body was placed on a custom-built Dominator chassis that was hand formed within the shop. The front of the car was narrowed to a point, leaving the front axle bars and the mechanics of the brakes to be exposed, while the rear was formed to a wide body look to accommodate the open cabin. Once the body and chassis work were completed, the next major step was the paint.
The team at Dominator knew when it came to the paint it had to be out of this world and it had to be done by one of the best, so they sent this street legal spaceship to Art Himsl, a pioneer and legend when it comes to painting unique color schemes on hot rods. Known as one of the few artists that can mix all the color theories and designs all in one project, Himsl put his magic on full display with this one. Using DuPont paint as the base and for the main colors, the outcome is truly spectacular and eye catching to say the least. Pinstriping and graphics were seamlessly blended throughout the body, but it can only be fully appreciated when one walks around the car multiple times, as a different color or pattern will show depending on the angle from which it’s admired.
Opening up the custom suicide doors will show you that the creativity didn’t just end with the exterior, as the interior has been completely altered. Rich Santana of Diamond Springs, California started with the seats by taking mahogany wood and crafting it into the exact angle and height needed. The mahogany was covered in firm, but comfy stuffing and saddle-stitched, custom-dyed leather. Santana used a unique wraparound method that forsakes the traditional side seams and skirting to give it a cleaner appearance. Stemming from the dashboard, is a custom levitating middle console which houses the automatic shifter.
This custom hot rod gives the term “retro rocket” a whole new meaning, as under the hood it packs a serious punch. Built by Arizona Speed and Marine, and only using GM performance parts, a rippling fuel-injected Chevy engine was placed at the heart. The combination of the engine and custom-built side exhaust gives it a loud and aggressive sound that can be heard when one is tearing down the road. Wanting to make sure it could be enjoyed to its full potential on the road, like the rest of the car, no expenses were spared while putting together the lower half of the car. Wilwood disc brakes, Afco shocks, and new Michelin tires were placed in all four corners to ensure a smooth ride.
This “DuPont Domination” experimental roadster is no stranger to being the center of attention, as it drove away with a first-place award for best paint at the Oakland Roadster Show, a prestigious custom and hot rod event that had over 500 cars entered in it. It was also the cover car for Street Rodder Magazine, one of the largest magazines for custom cars. This street legal 1934 Chevrolet Custom roadster is truly in a league of its own and proven to live up to the Dominator standards. This one-of-a-kind masterpiece is the center of attention anywhere it goes and will be an outstanding addition to any collection.
