In the ‘50s, a truck was just a work vehicle, until Chevrolet developed the stylish new Cameo Carrier, as it was first known. Along with a fleet of new automotive styles and designs in 1955, and of course the new V-8 engine, Chevrolet was enjoying an increase in sales that made them America’s most popular car company. By 1958, Jim Jordan’s truck styling expertise made the Cameo a virtual blueprint for decades of trucks to come out of Detroit.
This striking beauty is a documented three-owner truck, having lived in Florida until just recently. The first owner insisted that he would not buy the truck unless he could have air-conditioning. So, the astute selling dealer arranged just that and the new buyer drove home in comfort with his newly installed air-conditioning. The restoration work is impressive, with lovely panel gaps, clean fresh chrome and trim, and expertly applied paint. Enthusiast agree that this Cameo is adorned in the ideal color combination of turquoise and black. These trucks simply attract a ton of attention wherever they go, and this fine Cameo shows strongly from every angle. GM initially resisted having the bed attached to the cab, as they feared the long metal panels would buckle, so they solved that dilemma by sourcing fiberglass panels to give the truck it’s new sleek slab-sided look.
Pop the hood, and you’ll see a fully restored, and original, six-cylinder engine, backed by a three-speed column shifter with overdrive. The firewall is clean and correct, with a meticulous restoration of the entire engine bay, and everything looks just as it left Detroit in 1958. It’s just as clean “down below” as the flawless paint is beautiful “up top”, and it’s easy to see that this truck has always been well-cared for.
Inside, the carpeted floors with a space-age looking dash and a radio were unusual for the day. This example survives in excellent condition throughout, obviously a testament to the care it received from the first three owners. Sometimes called the world’s first sport truck, Chevrolet realized the market was there for more comfortable, car-like trucks, and the last year 1958 Cameo represents the very best and most desirable of these landmark designs. As much fun to drive as it is to show, you’ll be the envy of the neighborhood in the lovely Cameo.
