The Corvette Sting Ray changed everything the moment it hit the market. It was the most provocative and captivating modern sportscar America had ever produced and it cemented its position as Chevrolet’s tête de cuvee sportscar from then on; it’s still one of the most yearned automobiles nearly 60 years later. Of the Sting Rays, the Split-Window Coupes from the inaugural year are, without dispute, the most valuable and highly sought-after. This remarkable example is a numbers-matching original with less than 27,000 miles on the odometer.
A decade in, the Corvette brand was due for a new look, but what resulted was vastly more incendiary than a mere overhaul in style. A perfect marriage of myriad influences coalesced to create sheer magic. Engine options remained the same. Other than that, everything changed - from X to ladder frame chassis, innovative suspension, a tighter wheelbase with a structurally sound body brilliantly comprised of steel and fiberglass evolved into a true sportscar of infinitely superior handling to its predecessor. In the cockpit, the Corvette delivered on enhanced comfort and luxury that even rivaled its European counterparts – power windows, AM/FM radio, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, a twin cowl dash with a striking vertical column and bucket seats that were actually enjoyable to sit in. A handful of some of the most talented stylists and engineers in automotive history were serendipitously part of crafting this breathtakingly beautiful car, including Larry Shinoda, Zora Arkus-Duntov, Pete Brock (who designed the Shelby Daytona) and Bill Mitchell. The dramatic, extended hood, hidden headlamps, inimitable split-window fastback’s quick slope to a sleek bobbed tail, evolved out of the Q Corvette concept, Mitchell’s Sting Ray racer, wind tunnel testing and countless other sources. The look would become a legacy few marques could ever imagine, much less execute. A list of firsts, the inaugural Sting Ray was also the first Corvette coupe as well as the first and last Split-Window fastback – it’s the perfect trifecta and only 10,594 units were ever produced. Of the small number that remain, this rare example is as original and low mileage as you are likely to find anywhere.
Presented in a timeless and factory-correct white exterior over deep blue interior, this car has enjoyed quite the sheltered life. A matching-numbers Split-Window Sting Ray, this low-mileage example boasts the original 327 cubic-inch V-8, which delivers 250 horsepower and 350 lbs-ft of torque and shifts through the original four-speed transmission. It rolls on original steel wheels wrapped in radials. With only one owner since November 29, 1979 and 26,369 original miles on the odometer, this is staggeringly low mileage for such a rare, highly sought-after car. Restored almost 40 years ago by renowned split-window expert, Marty Fowler, this car has matching everything and is exceedingly correct inside and out. A tome of documents accompanies the car including inspection sheet, bill of sale and sales receipt from Ken Ruble Chevrolet of Piedmont, Missouri, handwritten oil change diary, Corvette judging sheets from 1980, signed odometer statements as well as photo documentation of disassembly and restoration completed by Fowler. This beautifully preserved split-window Vette was tucked away for many years and has recently undergone a comprehensive tune up and servicing. It’s the whole package. This example is ready for its second chapter, either as the rare gem in a Corvette collection or as the longed-for inaugural Sting Ray you have always wanted.
