The Ferrari 308, Tom Selleck’s Magnum P.I. co-star, upgraded Dino successor and badged Ferrari, delivered all the prestige of the prancing horse upon its debut with a price tag that was a touch more palatable. In fact, tantalizing styling, courtesy of Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, coupled with a return to the ever-popular transverse mid-engine placement, would coalesce to create a wildly successful and iconic model that would come to define a decade.
Leonardo Fioravanti is among the most lauded names in Pininfarina history and can take credit for the striking design of the Ferrari 308 as well as the Daytona, Dino and Berlinetta Boxer. Introduced at the Paris Salon in 1975, his 308 took some of his best inspirational cues from the early Dino and evolved the look into a slightly more wedged style that would inevitably dominate late ‘70s and ‘80s sportscars. The juxtaposition of classic curve with a more angular front end makes for a more timeless design than many of its contemporaries. Under the hood, the 2.9-litre Tipo F105 AB V-8 boasts a 90-degree configuration and a return to the celebrated transverse mid-engine placement. Due to emission standards in the United States, the 308 was forced to abandon its Weber carburetors for fuel injection in 1980. Results for horsepower were originally dismal until Ferrari innovated the “Quattrovalvole,” through Bosch K-Jetronic in 1982, which translates to “four valves” per cylinder. This pushed horsepower to a more powerful 240 horsepower at 7,000 rpms and 191 ft-lbs of torque with a top speed of 158 miles per hour. Equipped with a fully synchronized five-speed transaxle with a limited slip differential, this shifts flawless through a synchromesh gearbox that features an open-gate shifter with a dog-leg first gear that Ferrari purists yearn for. The reconfiguration to Quattrovalvole was accommodated through slight stylistic tweaks including a new front fascia for enhanced airflow. There were two 308 models, the Berlinetta (GTB) and the Spider (GTS). The GTS is actually less of a spider (full convertible) and more of a targa top where a black vinyl roof section is removable for open air driving. Once the GTS debuted in 1977, the GTS outsold the GTB by four to one! The targa-style top, first introduced in 1966 by Porsche, became incredibly popular upon release and remained a definitive look in sportscars throughout the ‘80s. With Fioravanti’s timeless design and Ferrari’s willingness to evolve with the times, the iconic 308 enjoyed a remarkably long ten-year production run.
This particular 1985 Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole hails from the last year of production and it doesn’t get more iconic than this. Robed in that unmistakable Rosso Corsa Red paint with a Tobacco Tan leather interior and Castoro carpet, this beauty screams unmistakable Pininfarina panache. Featuring the targa-top-style GTS body, this spider boasts all the options including power mirrors, the deep front spoiler and air-conditioning, as well as upgraded and wider 16-inch Speedline wheels. Over the course of this 308’s pampered life, it has known four owners, has been driven less than 47,000 miles and comes with complete service records to tell its narrative. It has recently had a hood and spoiler paint refresh by LaVine Restorations and has undergone a major servicing with belt change by reputable Continental Motorsports in August 2019. Since that time, it’s been driven less than 350 miles and has been nurtured with kid gloves. Included in the sale is the owner’s manual, tool kit, service records, canvas car covers and the original window sticker. If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a Ferrari 308, this is it.
