Jaguar XK140 FHC SE (1955)

Jaguar introduced the XK140 in 1954 as a successor to the very successful XK120. With a longer wheel base and more leg room, the 140 was a more accommodating car for taller drivers. In addition to the standard range of coupe, roadster and convertible, the car was also available in SE specification with 2 inch sand cast carburettors and a further upgrade to a type C cylinder head was also offered. These two upgrades combined pushed the 3.4 litre 6 cylinder XK engine to well over 200bhp.
767UYK is just such a car. Built in June 1955 as a SE specification car and equipped with the type C head, the car was exported to the USA where she was sold by Charles Hornburg of Los Angeles California.
Move forward 57 years and our car was discovered in a barn in Oregon from where is it was purchased by it British owner and quickly returned to the UK for restoration.
A full body-off photographic restoration was carried out by Leaping Cats. The engine was rebuilt, using the cars original block and head by VSE. New sandcast carburettors were sourced and a stainless steel tubular exhaust manifold installed. The brakes were uprated with servo assistance. The rear axle was given a watts linkage to better locate it and steering was greatly enhanced with the addition of rack-and-pinion power steering. The cars original gearbox is retained but fully overhauled as is the overdrive unit. Also during the restoration a modern alternator was fitted, boost pump for the fuel system and of course, the steering wheel was moved to the correct side!
There are also some rather nice upgrades to the car’s interior. In addition to a complete re-trim which has been well executed, the overdrive switch has moved to the top of the gear-lever and a column mounted indicator switch fitted, both of which make the driving experience much more intuitive.
The rear seats have been deleted and in their place is a very nice storage compartment. Together with the standard cars through loading panel in the boot, this make for a very practical touring car.
All of this work together with a very high quality restoration have produced a car which is perfect for fast long distance touring. The car is a delight to drive with real world performance and a super smooth engine.
One of the best XK140s we have come across, 767UYK is ready and waiting for a new custodian to enjoy. Matching numbers with a JDHT Heritage certificate, full photographic record of its restoration and in first class condition, we believe she is not just as good as new, we would suggest the carefully thought out upgrades have transformed the normally rather pedestrian 140 into something really rather special.
