1935 MG PB Midget (1935)

1935 MG ‘PB’ Midget

The successor to the highly popular J2 Midget came in March 1934 in the form of the ‘P’ Series. This new model boasted a number of improvements over the earlier model, the most important being the stronger 847cc engine with three main bearings, improved Tecalemit lubrication.  12” brakes were also a new feature and  chassis was also sturdier than before.

The P Series Midget was available in two and four seat configurations with a choice of attractive colour schemes.  A ‘fastback’ Airline coupe was also available.

During 1935 the P Series was to undergo further desirable improvements, now being designated ‘PB’ and in this guise it was to be the final version of the much loved OHC Midgets. Visible differences were the use of a vertical slatted radiator grille and a revised dashboard layout, while the engine capacity was increased to 939cc, giving a welcome boost of power with an output of 43 bhp. Just 526 examples were produced before the PB was replaced by the larger ‘T’ Series later in 1936.

Presented here is a PB which was first registered in November 1935. The subject of an extensive restoration which would appear to have been undertaken in the early eighties according to documentation supplied, this car remains in very smart order and has clearly been well cared for over the years. Finished in the correct colours of Ulster and Dublin Green, the cockpit is trimmed in green leatherette and there is serviceable weather equipment.

Running very well with good oil pressure, the dynamo has recently been fully rebuilt and a new regulator fitted. There is considerable paperwork supplied by the vendor, including a number of letters from the MG Works during the ‘30’s and various letters dating back to the immediate post war period. Also included is the correct Instruction Manual for the P and PB Series along with a Service Parts List. An old green RF60 logbook dating from 1964 is also on file. A number of earlier photos are also included.

A most interesting and comparatively rare MG, it is recorded on the ‘MMM’ Register and retains its original Middlesex registration number.
