Description

1934 Riley Ulster Imp – ADU 303 -  Extensive Competition History
Chassis number:  6025036
This genuine Riley Ulster Imp has a remarkable history, having been campaigned successfully over many years in South Africa.  Rarely do competition cars of this period with such impeccable provenance come to market with both Pre and Post War
ADU 303 – the original Coventry Registration was reunited with the car on its return to the UK in 2008.
There are 15 files of documentation which fully substantiate the extensive history of this Riley Ulster Imp - one of just 16 built by Riley’s Competition Department, of which 9 are known to survive.
ADU 303 was first raced in Northern Ireland in 1934 by Freddie Clifford in the Ulster Tourist Trophy race.    During 1936 the Riley was exported to South Africa having been acquired by Buller Meyer, a successful racing driver who had purchased the car on the recommendation of Lord Howe who felt sure it would prove to be very competitive as all major South African races were run on a handicap basis.   During 1950 the car was purchased by George Lezard, subsequently passed through 2 other owners culminating in the purchase by Colonel Brett in the late 50s.  In 1984 the car was acquired by John Harmsworth who retained the Imp until it was to pass into the present ownership in 2008 when it returned to the United Kingdom.
Pre-War Races include:
1934 RAC Tourist Trophy (ARDS) – Northern Ireland
1936 3rd Kimberley 100 (South Africa)
1937 3rd South African Grand Prix
1937 2nd Rand Grand Prix
1938 4th South African Grand Prix
1938 2nd Grosvenor Grand Prix
