1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Barker Saloon GYH36 (1935)

Last with us in 1989, this is a particularly well cared for, spacious owner-driver saloon, which has been with one owner for the last 30 years or thereabouts, coming with two folders of paperwork, which includes invoices for maintenance and repair over the last 25 years amounting to £65,000. This included re-wiring in cotton covered cable (incorporating flashing indicators and original trafficators, both operating from the same switch), stainless exhaust system, various work to axles, brakes, etc, and much more besides. The car is all correct and in fine condition throughout, nicely finished in black and blue, lovely chrome work, with excellent interior in very dark blue leather, with nice veneers, carpets and headlining, and with footrests and picnic tables built into the back of the front seats. Also equipped with a large sliding sunroof and a fold-out luggage rack behind the boot panel at the rear. The car is serviced and prepared, running very sweetly, driving nicely too, and MoT tested.

Charles Edgar Whitehead took delivery of GYH36 at 9 Harley Rd, Ecclesall.  He was a member of the Whitehead engineering family - his relations invented the torpedo & textile machines (Robert Whitehead) & the “Flying Shuttle” for use on looms (John Kay)!  The extended European family links include the Von Trapp (Sound of Music), the Hapsburg & the von Bismarks.  The Whitehead family also had vested interests in Staveley Coal & Iron, Cammell Laird & Co (Catalina flying boats), Midland Railway, British Soda Ltd and Bengers Food Co Ltd to name just a few!  Charles was the general manger of the Devonshire Works of Staveley Coal & Iron Co for 17 years until his retirement in 1945, he died just 2 years later aged 60.  Charles only kept GYH36 for 12 months before it was acquired by George Henry Key who had purchased Oakhill in Cromford from the estate of Sir Arkwright in 1924 – he had been the tenant at Oakhill since 1918 when Mary Arkwright died.  George’s business concerns included the mining (ochre for their Via Gellia colour works) Boatbuilding (Wheatcroft & sons) he also managed to find time to be a magistrate and to sit on the Urban District Council.  After his death in 1958 there is a gap as to the car’s ownership but in 1973 she appears in Rhode Island with William Dyer Jones a keen motorist and yachtsman, he was heavily involved in the America’s Cup from 1967 to the 1990s – his grandfather was the founder of Dyer Boats in Rhode Island.
