Four-wheeled superstar chic is going under the hammer
Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay is well-known for being a serious petrolhead with an envious car collection and at next month's Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at the NEC Birmingham, he's selling seven of them.
So, it's fair to say that the Silverstone Auctions sale on 10 and 11 November will contain some pretty special cars.
But not all will sell for mega-money – one has a sub-£20,000 estimate – so this could be your chance to get your piece of automotive music memorabilia
We've already enjoyed an in-depth look at his near-exact replica of the Bullitt Mustang (above) that features in this sale – and more on that later – but, as you might expect, that's not the only exciting car on offer. Read on!
-
1989 BMW M3 E30 Johnny Cecotto Ltd Edition
Let's start with this rare E30 BMW.
How rare? It's one of only 505 Limited Edition models built.
And here it is with Jay Kay, who's presumably bidding it a fond farewell.
-
1989 BMW M3 E30 Johnny Cecotto Ltd Edition (cont.)
As you might've guessed from the car's name, these 505 exclusive models were built to celebrate Johnny Cecotto’s 1988 European Touring Car Championship victory in, you guessed it, a BMW M3 – that explains that spoiler, then.
It's understood Jay Kay bought this car around a decade ago and it's always been stored in a temperature-controlled environment.
-
1989 BMW M3 E30 Johnny Cecotto Ltd Edition (cont.)
Under the bonnet lies a 2.3-litre, four-cylinder engine good for 215bhp.
Since 1989, this left-hand drive car has covered under 18,000 miles and thanks to meticulous care is being offered for sale in apparently exceptional condition.
-

The distinctive, blue-and-red-striped interior trim is specific to these 505 special-edition models.
In addition, they're all finished in Nogaro Silver and wear black-centred wheels, just so you don't mistake them for any other M3.
The pre-sale estimate for this BMW M3 E30 Johnny Cecotto Ltd Edition is £70-85,000.
-
1996 BMW 850CSi
But that's not the only BMW Jay Kay has consigned to November's Silverstone Auctions sale.
How about this low-mile 1996 850CSi?
It's had just two owners from new and it's another rarity.
-
1996 BMW 850CSi (cont.)
Of course, one of those owners is Jay Kay, so it's perhaps apt that it is finished in Cosmos Black.
This pillarless coupé has done under 12,800 miles, has a cabin trimmed in black leather and wears Alpina alloys, these wheels being the only non-standard items on the car.
-
1996 BMW 850CSi (cont.)
But perhaps the biggest star of this show is this 5576cc S70 V12 engine – that means 380hp at 5300rpm and 402lb ft of torque at 4000rpm.
This is mated to a Getrag six-speed manual gearbox. It might not be Supersonic, but this is one effortlessly rapid modern-classic two-door.
Other features of this car include heated front seats, a graduated tinted windscreen and a tracker system.
-
1996 BMW 850CSi (cont.)
We said this was rare, so how rare? It's one of only 138 examples supplied to the British market – and of these 138, surely they can't all still be in such good condition.
Having lived a pampered life, this car comes to auction with an estimate of £80-100,000.
-
1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL
We've established that Jay Kay is a big BMW enthusiast, but he clearly has a keen eye for other German marques as this late model R107 SL proves.
It may have been enjoyed for 54,000 miles to date – rather more than some of the other lots in this sale – but that's nothing for a classic Mercedes-Benz.
-
1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (cont.)
It is understood that Jay Kay was reluctant to sell this roadster, having owned it for over eight years, and it's not hard to see why.
Its Thistle Green Metallic paintwork might be very much of its time but it still has a timeless elegance today.
Maybe in time, he'll see selling this as Virtual Insanity...
-
1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (cont.)
The upholstery complements the exterior shade and with a well-kept cabin, it's sure to make a lovely place from which to enjoy roof-down cross-continental blasts, the like of which this car was born to do.
Its 3-litre, six-cylinder engine might not waft like its V8 siblings, but it's more nimble, and it's reported that this example is a smooth performer.
-
1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (cont.)
But if the weather isn't on your side, it's good to know that a colour-matched, factory-supplied hardtop is being sold with this SL.
As you might expect, its service history is sound, with main-dealer maintenance for the first 20 years and by an independent specialist thereafter.
-
1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (cont.)
The pre-sale estimate for Jay Kay's Mercedes-Benz 300SL is £30-35,000.
Could you be tempted to bid for this classic at next month's Silverstone Auctions sale at the NEC?
-
1996 Volvo 850R Sport-Wagon
We said that there was a car with a sub-£20,000 estimate and here it is.
Yes, you guessed it, it's another rare model – and perfect if you want to get somewhere fast whilst carrying the family and perhaps the kitchen sink, too.
-
1996 Volvo 850R Sport-Wagon (cont.)
Imported to the UK from Japan last year, this Swedish stalwart is powered by a 2.3-litre, five-cylinder, turbocharged engine that develops 250bhp, making it something of an undercover performer.
We're talking 0-62mph in 6.5 secs with a 158mph top speed.
And if it doesn't already sound like an enthusiast's car, it has a five-speed manual ’box and a limited-slip differential.
-
1996 Volvo 850R Sport-Wagon (cont.)
This rare homologation special is painted in Dark Olive Pearl, has 17in Volan wheels and a well-specced interior trimmed in Charcoal leather and Amaretta (suede).
Jay Kay's hot Volvo is estimated to sell for £15-18,000 next month.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt'
Which brings us back to this, arguably the most eye-catching of Jay Kay's cars to be sold in Birmingham next month.
As you probably guessed, this is a near-exact replica of Steve McQueen's famous steed from the film Bullitt.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt' (cont.)
The eagle-eyed among you will have noted that this is a 1967 car, despite Bullitt being released in 1968 – well, we said it was a close recreation of that famous Mustang.
And its evocative Highland Green Metallic paint, Torque Thrust wheels and blacked-out grille certainly resonate with its silver-screen inspiration.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt' (cont.)
That brutishly elegant Fastback profile has lost none of its appeal, either.
Who knows, as 2018 is Bullitt's 50th anniversary, perhaps that will help this car to smash its £58-68,000 estimate.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt' (cont.)
You certainly feel you're Travelling Without Moving inside.
There's a four-speed, top-loader manual gearbox that has recently been overhauled and the interior is in good, ready-to-use condition.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt' (cont.)
This is one cared-for classic – indeed, it's benefited from not one but two engine rebuilds.
Lift the bonnet and you'll see this 390cu in 'big-block' unit, while the comprehensive history file that's sold with this Ford details the extensive work and upgrades that have been completed.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt' (cont.)
This Mustang's white-lettered BF Goodrich tyres contribute to its Bullitt appearance.
And with all that power, potential buyers might find it a reassurance to know there's a Wilwood front and rear disc brake package fitted.
-
1967 Ford Mustang 390GT Fastback 'Bullitt' (cont.)
Over £7000 was spent on this car in July 2017 and it's understood to be ready for road use without any further expenditure.
This will surely be one to watch at Silverstone Auctions' two-day NEC Classic Motor Show sale.
-
2015 Porsche 911 (991) targa 4S
Two other – rather less classic – cars from this famous stable are also set to cross the block next month; and this is one of them.
Just three years old, Jay Kay is the second owner of this 11,600-mile, Night Blue Metallic 911 targa.
Well-specced and, like the rest of the singer-songwriter's garage, well-cared-for, it's estimated that the gavel will come down at £75-85,000 when bidding finishes on this Porsche.
-
2016 McLaren 675LT
Another modern car that surely has future-classic potential is this left-hand-drive, 2016 McLaren 675LT.
It's in what claims to be a unique colour scheme of Chicane Grey with orange and grey seats, and it's a super-low-mile example, 2000 yet to appear on its odometer.
As its name suggests, once in those seats you have 675bhp at your disposal from the 3.8-litre V8 – that's 0-60mph in 2.9 secs.
You might feel like a Space Cowboy in this car – if you can afford the not-insignificant £230-280,000 estimate it's commanding.
Catch Jay Kay's seven cars in Silverstone Auctions' NEC Classic Motor Show sale on 10 and 11 November.
