Highlights of the world’s greatest classic car festival
The Goodwood Revival is a world unto itself: a fantastic three-day festival of historic motorsport complete with period-correct sights and sounds, it’s really more of a vast retro-themed playground for car fans.
Not that you have to like cars to enjoy it – with everything from authentic ’60s hairdressers to a vintage fairground to impeccably recreated shops on offer, you could lose hours here just wandering around and taking it all in.
And that’s exactly what we did when the 22nd edition opened this morning (Friday 13 September). Here are our highlights.
-
Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’ and 230SL ‘Pagoda’
The excitement starts before you even get through the gates, thanks to The Revival Car Show – aka the pre-’66 car park.
This would be worth the admission in its own right, frankly, serving up a higher quality of classics than you get at many actual shows.
And for proof, look no further than this fabulous 1966 Mercedes 230SL ‘Pagoda’ parked up alongside its 1955 300SL ‘Gullwing’ ancestor.
-
Renault 8 Gordini 1300
Nigel Patten’s 1965 Renault 8 Gordini 1300 Group 2 rally car, as featured in the July issue of C&SC.
-
BMW 2000
Steel wheels give a sporty look to this BMW ‘Neue Klasse’ 2000 sedan that perfectly sets off its Sahara beige paintwork – and from the registration it appears to have travelled all the way from Germany.
-
Marcos 1800
Good to see a 1965 Marcos 1800 on show during the marque’s 60th anniversary year. This one features four-cylinder Volvo power.
-
Peerless GT
Nicely restored 1961 Peerless GT is a practical coupé with glassfibre body, based on the classic Triumph TR.
-
Gordon-Keeble GK1
Jersey-registered Gordon-Keeble GK1. These American V8-powered and British-built coupés remain among the most desirable Anglo-american hybrids.
-
BMW 2002
Rare and desirable 1974 BMW 2002 turbo was the ultimate development of the 02 series and LHD-only.
-
Saab 96
This 1971 Saab 96 – with Ford-sourced 1.5-litre V4 engine – is now a rare sight in such lovely condition.
-
Ferrari Dino 246GT
Exotics are a common sight in the Revival car park – and for proof, look no further than this gorgeous 1971 Ferrari Dino 246GT, complete with very appropriate numberplate.
-
Fiat 850 Bertone Spider
Little and large drop-tops: super-cute Fiat 850 Bertone Spider on Minilite-style wheels lines up alongside a Ford Mustang Convertible.
-
Audi 100 convertible
Rare and pretty 1975 Audi 100 Convertible conversion by Crayford, one of just nine known to have been converted.
-
Bristol 411 Series III
Smart 1975 Bristol 411 Series III looks handsome in two-tone black over brown, with Jaguar XJ6 Series III alloys.
-
Alvis TA21
Handsome 1951 Alvis TA21 features 3-litre straight-six power and elegant saloon coachwork.
-
Land-Rover S1
Wonderful 1956 Series I Land-Rover 107in Station Wagon with ‘Safari Roof’.
-
Peugeot 304
When did you last see one of these? Pretty 1974 Peugeot 304 Cabriolet styled by Pininfarina is a sadly rare sight today.
-
Citroën DS
While the anniversaries of Bentley and Mini are being celebrated on track, this lovely French-registered DS in the car park is one of several on show to mark Citroën’s centenary.
-
Porsche 356A
Rad rods are an increasingly popular trend, and they don’t get much rattier than this marvellously patinated 1956 Porsche 356A coupé.
-
Ferrari 250GTE
Isn’t it lovely to see a Ferrari 250GTE that hasn’t been turned into a GTO or SWB replica? This gorgeous 1962 Ferrari is surely one of Pininfarina’s prettiest four-seaters.
-
Chevrolet 3100 pick-up
US-sourced classics are increasingly popular for Revival transport, none cooler this year than this 1955 Chevrolet 3100 pick-up.
-
Fiat 1100
German-registered Fiat 1100 is another far-flung visitor, and a charming rarity.
-
Bond Minicar Mark C
Presumably a relatively local visitor – or a brave traveller – this wonderful 1955 Bond Minicar Mark C is powered by a tiny 197cc engine driving the single front wheel.
-
Ford Thunderbird
Subtle, this 1976 Thunderbird ain’t. But it’s probably unique in the Goodwood Revival car park, and few people here can say that about their wheels…
-
Land-Rover SII
Blue-sky motoring at its slowest? Quite possibly, and both are fine with us.
-
Triumph Herald Courier van
C&SC’s own Jack Phillips is stuck in a self-confessed Triumph Herald rut at the moment, and soon set his heart on buying this Courier van.
-
Porsche 911 Carrera
Bonhams is holding its traditional Revival auction tomorrow, and this 911 stood out as one of the most interesting lots on offer.
As you might have guessed, it has a lengthy rallying career behind it and has in fact covered more competitive miles than any other Porsche. It’ll cost you £400-500k, though.
-
Cooper Climax T55
This Cooper single-seater was driven by Jack Brabham in the 1961 F1 season, and is now up for sale with Bonhams. What’s more, proceeds from the sale will go to Sir Jackie Stewart’s Race Against Dementia charity.
-
Ferrari 365GT4 Berlinetta Boxer
Another Bonhams offering is this Ferrari 365GT4 BB – one of only 58 RHD-supplied examples and a snip at £220-280k.
-
Aston-Martin 1½ Litre
We’re also quite partial to this 1923 Aston-Martin (yes, back then it had a hyphen). Thought to be one of the oldest surviving Astons, it is said to drive very nicely, despite being 96 years old.
-
Rolls recreated
Rolls-Royce pulled out all the stops for this year’s Revival, recreating its period motor show sets and showcasing two lovely models including this 1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I convertible.
-
It’s the pits
The sounds and smells of race cars permeate the Revival, particularly if you wander down to the pits area. This 1948 Talbot-Lago Type 26C is competing in the Goodwood Trophy later this weekend.
-
Bentleys everywhere
In case you missed the news, it’s Bentley’s centenary this year, and Goodwood’s marking the occasion by filling its Brooklands Trophy with some of the most famous pre-war models.
-
Monger Mini
Minis, as you might expect, are everywhere as they celebrate their 60th birthday. This one’s being driven by F3 star-turned-F1 pundit Billy Monger in a demonstration parade each day.
-
Ferrari 250GT SWBs out in force
The Ferrari 250GT SWB is surely one of the sexiest, most exciting cars ever made – so seeing eight of them lined up together ahead of tonight’s Kinrara Trophy is quite the thrill.
That said, right at the bottom of the row there’s an even bigger draw…
-
Ferrari 250GTO
…yes, it’s a Ferrari 250GTO, aka the only car that can reliably upstage a bunch of Ferrari 250GT SWBs.
-
A Mini legend
‘33 EJB’ is about as iconic as Minis come – after all, Paddy Hopkirk drove it to victory in the 1964 Monte-Carlo Rally. We will admit to not being sure whether this is the original or the painstakingly correct replica (we think the latter), but either way, it’s a thrill to see it.
-
Land-Rover Series 1
Mike Rivett’s Landie is one of the stars of the Best of British exhibition inside the Earls Court Motor Show at the Revival, together with a Lotus Esprit, McLaren F1, Ford GT40, Mini and Jaguar E-type.
-
The Mountain Pass
Recognise this scene? That’s because it’s a recreation of one of the iconic moments in The Italian Job.
-
Ecurie Ecosse transporter
The famous, evocative Ecurie Ecosse transporter is a regular in the Revival paddock.
Built on a Commer TS3 coach chassis it stands 30ft long and made its first public appearance at Charterhall on 28 May 1960. Its first trip to Le Mans was the following month, for the D-type’s final foray.
-
Mini Mokes
Mokes are out in force in this the Mini’s diamond anniversary year – when did you last see so many in one place?
-
Pint-size superstars
The may look cute and colourful, but competition between these Austin J40 pedal cars is fierce.
After a Le Mans-style start, the children contesting the Settrington Cup will pedal with all their might to be first to the chequered flag.
-
Classic caravans
It’s the perfect weather for enjoying the great outdoors and how better than to do it in true Revival spirit with a classic caravan?
-
Goodwood-on-Sea?
The period trappings aren’t confined to matters automotive: there’s even a period-correct ‘beach’, complete with beach huts.
-
Ice cream man
No ordinary ice cream van, this one started life as a 1932 Rolls-Royce before having the top chopped off so it could be turned into a convertible wedding car and finally ending up selling ices to hot folk at festivals!
-
When he’s cleaning windows
George Shuttleworth was a character George Formby played in the 1935 film No Limit, but he lives on in the form of Graeme Hardy’s tribute act, complete with Triumph motorbike.
-
Up, up and away
As well as the two- and four-wheeled heroes, the Revival also has plenty of airborne stars. Looming over the smaller Pilatus P-2 is the behemoth Douglas C41A.
-
Men (not) at work
The attention to detail at the Revival is impeccable, right down to the road crew on the Revival’s main straight studiously not doing any work. Let’s hope they moved before the racing started.
