BMW 1800

4-door 5-seater saloon.

Lifesaving BMW saloon of 1962 was originally a 1500, updated to 1600, and the 1800 was larger-engined, plusher-equipped version of it. All-steel monocoque shell, MacPherson strut front end, semi-trailing independent rear, powered by single overhead-cam engine which has continued - much modified - throughout the 1980s. TI of 1964-68 had 110bhp, soon displaced by 2000TI. First 1800s had 1773cc, then in 1968 rationalisation (big bore, short stroke) led to 7cc size reduction! All replaced by 5-Series cars of 1972.
