Successful, sexily-styled Wanekl-engined coupé which redeemed this engine type's reputation in UK, and especially in USA. Worthy competitor to Porsche 924 or Datsun Z-car, with European-standard road behaviour. 105bhp at first, but 115bhp from 1981, with 125mph top speed. All UK examples had five-speed transmission, though automatic found in USA models. Hundreds converted here to turbocharging (160bhp?), with catalogue factory model, USA-sale only, from 1984. An enterprising job well done and a great success for Mazda.
