MERCEDES-BENZ 540K

Saloon, cabriolet A, cabriolet B, cabriolet C, tourer, convertible coupé, sports with dickey, sports roadster, fixed-head coupé.

Now with uprated engine and 180bhp with blower engaged (but horrendous fuel consumption), 106mph was possible, and The Motor found the handling and steering less heavy than the 500K, with an even more comfortable ride. Like the 500K, with its identical chassis, there was all round ifs, tricky handling in extremis, servo assisted hydraulic brakes, and some glorious coachwork. Not all bodies were spectacular, the factory cabrios B and C being typically Teutonic. In the USA, incidentally, the 540K cost $12,000, twice the price of a V16 Caddie.
