MERCEDES-BENZ S

4-seater tourer, various customs.

Possibly the best looking of the S class Mercs (known as the 36/220 in this country). Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the straight six has aluminium head, single overhead camshaft, twin carbs and a Roots type blower operated by throttle pedal pressure. Around 180bhp on tap, and they make the most gorgeous noise! Four speed crash 'box, 134ins wheelbase, exhaust headers outside the bonnet, dual ignition, and typically massive chassis. Good for over the ton, although the brakes always suspect. Factory (Sindelfingen) tourers attractive, and one or two tourers by other coachbuilders, especially Zietz of Geneva, stunning. With its low rad, however, closed bodies unbecoming. Very expensive, if you can find one.
