NSU Ro80
2-door 5-seater saloon.
The most intriguing 'might-have-been' of modern times, a great-looking Wankel-engined saloon, let down by engine unreality. Sleek wind-cheating style, four-wheel discs, power-assisted steering, semi-automatic transmission, and high -revving silky engine, plus 110mph top speed and excellent roadholding and refinement. If only NSU could have cracked the rotor sealing problem, this car would be an all-time great. Many surviving examples have Ford V4 or V6 engines instead of Wankels, but the true Wankel-engined Ro80s that remain are real collectors' items. Look, touch, but drive only gently. What a pity! It killed off NSU and their Wankel programme.
