OPEL SENATOR/MONZA

4-door 5-seater saloon/2-door 5-seater coupé.

Big, impressive GM model with all-independent suspension and (in seventies) all with powerful in-line six-cylinder engines. GM took badge-engineering to infuriating limits, also calling saloons Vauxhall Royales and later Vauxhall Senators - yet all German built. From end '79 with optional five-speed gearbox, later standardised, though most had automatic anyway. Up to 180bhp and 133mph with injected 3-litre. Diesels and four-cylinder derivatives not seen in UK. Monza (usually with 180bhp) was a luxurious fastback coupé. Startingly good when new, but old-fashioned when dropped.
