Renault
RENAULT 4

4-door 4-seater estate.

One step up from the horse and cart was Renault's characterful 2CV competitor, the first from the Régie with front engine/front-wheel drive layout. Fore-and-aft engine, narrow and upright styling, but immensely practical and - like all future Renaults of this type - capacious and softly-sprung. All-independent suspension was advanced, but push-pull gearshift (again, a 2CV copy) was weird. 12-volt electrics throughout seventies. From 1980 a high-geared 1108cc version, called GTL, joined range. A 603cc version was never sold in UK - it was called R3 in France.
