Saab
SAAB 96 V4

2-door 4-seater saloon.

Saab's ingenious marriage of Ford-Germany V4 engine with existing Swedish body style, structure and front wheel drive transmission, at first a pre-99 'interim' car, but successful throughout seventies. 65bhp gave near-90mph top speeds, disc front brakes helped, front-drive traction and handling were excellent, but a column gear change was always a toil. Few changes through the decade, and final assembly latterly in Finland. Last officially catalogued in UK at the end of 1976. Like the Morris Minor 1000, the 96 outlived its period with grace and dignity.
