TRIUMPH STAG (1970-77)

2-door 2+2-seater convertible/hardtop coupé.

The 'nearly' car from Canley in the seventies, which with reliability would have been a sure-fire winner, but engine problems (gaskets!) usually intervened. Conceived as a short-chassis/open top version of the 2000, but ended up with monocoque and V8 engine not shared with any other Triumphs. 145bhp gave about 115/118mph with 22mpg economy. Some cars with overdrive (standard late '72), many with automatic. Notable T-bar for roll-over safety. Much admired today, with engine problems completely solved, but has a 'hairdresser's car' image...
